Alfie’s story…

Alfie came into rescue, having been previously given away/rehomed and returned several times and his owners planned to euthanise him.  We were his final hope.  He had severe anxiety, behavioural problems and nervous aggression, sadly he wasn’t on the popular list for adoption.

Neutering was the first step, after which he needed lots of love, understanding and patience to help him to allay his fears and learn to trust.

Due to his issues, Alfie will never be ‘repaired’, but he has safe sanctuary with us and we don’t mind the ups and downs.

Alfie loves to be told that he is a good boy and with time and guidance, there has been a huge improvement in his behaviour

• DCR Alfie had a dental last week and is feeling so much better. His last dental was 3 years ago but unfortunately Chihuahuas often suffer from poor teeth, hence the importance of trying to get them used to teeth brushing or finding a diet to aid tooth health. As we all know, most Chihuahuas turn into little gremlins the minute we try to touch their mouth or nails but I would highly recommend you persevere and get them used to finger or tooth brushing from the start.
• DCR permanent foster dog Alfie was on his very best behaviour at the vets yesterday and amazingly even enjoyed a cuddle with his favorite Nessy. Alfie went in for a dental, pre-bloods were good and thankfully a heart scan was carried out prior to anaesthetic. Sadly the surgery was too high risk to proceed as the result revealed that Alfie’s low grade heart murmur is now stage 6 and he has developed mitral valve disease, which is much worse that the murmur on both sides of his heart. Surgery was cancelled and Alfie is now on medication in the hope that it will strengthen his heart muscles.
